Evaluation

Charles is a long & lean, athletic LHP/1B with room left to continue developing and adding strength. Showcased as a 2-way player, though he has better upside as a LHP. Offensively, he is a switch hitter with a similar approach from both sides. Limited bat speed but does have some leverage in path with chance to grow into some pull side power with continued physical development. However, the swing is stiff with some swing and miss concerns. Profiles better as a LHP. Very good pitchers frame with long limbs and large hands. Work needed with mechanics and still learning how to get everything in sync with his long limbs. Works from a stretch only delivery with a short stride and very upright finish. Would benefit from getting a much shorter arm path on his backside. Has a tendency to cut himself off limiting ability to get the ball to glove side of plate. Medium arm stroke, works cleanly and seems to hide the ball to create some deception. FB (69-73) does show some occasional late life with good tail & sink to arm side, has a chance to really be able to get under LHH’s hands. Also shows some feel to spin the ball. Slurvy type breaking ball (54-57) with some occasional sweeping quality. Charles is very much a project on the mound but a very projectable body, room to make some jumps in quality of stuff, ability to spin the ball, and deception all provide reasons to keep an eye on him as LHP going into this spring season.
